In a universe with alternative facts, is it possible to have an alternative President?

This is from a few weeks ago but thought I’d share it anyway…

“The party told you to reject all evidence of your eyes and ears. It was there final and most essential command.” ~ 1984, by George Orwell

Waking up to our new reality where Trump is president has been a hard adjustment for some of us. Certainly, our new Commander-and-Chief and the alternative world of facts he’s chosen to live in has been equally shocking. As we settle down into our new alternative existence, we might begin wondering to ourselves: In a universe with alternative facts, is it possible to also have an alternative president?screen-shot-2017-01-22-at-5-53-33-pm

“Yes” seems as plausible an answer as any.

In fact, in the world of alternative facts and invented truths, the only protection against another reality swallowing us whole may lie in the people shouting truths the loudest. Perhaps, saving democracy from dwindling into nonexistence requires collectively embracing the idea that another reality does exist, one with facts and truth, and even a different president.

Trump’s empty promises to drain the swamp are more apparent than ever. Rather than drain the swamp, the swamp has taken over. Extremely wealthy and powerful special interests are now in charge, their worst offenders exchanging cabinet seats for campaign contributions. In a world turned upside down, climate deniers control the EPA, anti-public school crusaders run the Department of Education, and Wall Street’s most egregious banks and Goldman-Sacks’ former CEO now oversees all banking regulations and the Federal reserve.

imageshitlerIn place of eliminating free trade, the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines are back in play, taxes are up to their usual trickle-down tricks, civil liberties, women’s and LGBT rights, religious, racial and constitutional freedoms- all up for grabs, and disappearing by the minute. If ever we were in need of a presidential alternative it’s now.

So, my alternative pick, were I allowed to chose. would be  Bernie Sanders,  and this is why: he’s honest, has integrity, and a long-standing record of always landing on the right side of history. His commitment to us, the people of this country, isn’t marred by compromise, remains free from lobbyists and corporate special interests, and is an alternative choice I can actually live with.

The true working class hero, Sanders is more a populist president than Trump will ever likely be. He also tells the truth and deals in facts, not the alternative truths this new guy insists on tweeting at us. Rather than wallow in defeat or jump on the wait-and-see bandwagon, Sanders stepped up. True to form, leaped into action and started fighting back. He’s still there now fighting for us all.

The only downside I can see to this alternative president thing is that we might find it difficult after a while choosing between the alternative reality and the reality alternative.

Maybe the alternative universe where Bernie Sanders is president will be such a nice break from reality we’ll all decide to stay there awhile…like till the year 2020, on the off-chance our alternative Trump reality suddenly expires.

In fact, the alternative universe where Sanders is president might start to feel like such a better reality than the one we’re currently stuck living in we may not want to come back at all. (Some of us are probably there already.)

lauren-hillOr, maybe we’ll get lucky and Mr. T will quit but rather than appoint Pence, we’ll get a do-over where everyone who shame-voted us into supporting possibly the only candidate capable of losing to Trump will all decide to vote for Bernie instead, the 74-year old independent socialist from Vermont, a truer democrat than most, and the one up by 12 points over Trump when, holding steady to her 1 to 2-point dwindling lead, we nominated Clinton instead…

(~I realize my bias is showing, but bear with me, folks! There is a point I’m getting to, somewhere…)

Of course, waiting around until 2020 for things to revert back to some kind of normal is probably an awfully big gamble none of us can afford to take. I mean, even questionable cabinet picks apparently have the ability in their alternative universe-turned reality to erase the past just by saying  it isn’t so,  so long as it’s done under oath…pretty neat trick, though, I’m not sure why that special eraser-pen was necessary for something well-documented and totally allowed and not even remotely  secret at the time. But, hey, there’s a lot about the alt-Trump universe I don’t understand.

I guess I’ll just chalk this one up to the same selective amnesia now turned truth disease the swamp people keep spreading around like wildfire in hopes the rest of us catch it, too. Fortunately for most, that amnesia eraser-pen doesn’t work too well yet, not on us or the internet, or truth sayers like Bernie Sanders, among others… Let’s hope it stays that way.

quote-i-ve-had-enough-of-someone-else-s-propaganda-i-m-for-truth-no-matter-who-tells-it-i-m-for-malcolm-x-249354

…I’ll be holding my tentative breath along with the rest of us while this current alt-reality finishes playing itself out…
